New Leica BLK360

Harrison Grierson are among the first group of NZ companies to secure a new Leica BLK360 imaging scanner and they’ve wasted no time putting their unit to work on multiple projects.

As a leading engineering and design firm, Harrison Grierson are known for their forward thinking, innovative approach and depth of expertise. Investing in the latest laser scanning technology was a natural choice.

Clare Tolan, General Manager of Survey explains the thinking behind the decision. “We wanted to invest in the BLK360 because it lets us apply scanning technology to a broader range of projects. Its size and speed make it realistic to use on small sites. It’s a great evolution of technology to make 3D scanning more of an everyday part of the HG Surveyors’ tool kit”.

Daryl Murray, Auckland Survey Manager saw an opportunity to diversify their current scanning applications which was a big driver behind their decision to purchase one of the first units available.

Putting The BLK360 To Work

Harrison Grierson have completed a number of projects with the Leica BLK360 ranging from building as-builts, service plans, water treatment plants and modelling. The BLK360 hit the ground running  and was quick to impress not only the Harrison Grierson team but also their clients.

One of their first projects was a water treatment plant in Palmerston North. The BLK360 fast tracked the project saving valuable time and resource.

“The size of the BLK360 allowed us to fly in, complete the job in a day, check the onsite registration and fly home with just a piece of carry-on luggage. The cost and time involved in transporting traditional scanners and equipment would have been too high on a job like this previously. The client was amazed when one surveyor showed up with a tiny BLK360 bag to complete the job when a previous survey required full kit, legs, spheres and targets” Joshua Mason, Auckland Senior Surveyor.

Harrison Grierson were on site Thursday, processed the point cloud by Friday and commenced modelling on the Monday.

With minimal training and site processing it allows their structural engineers, water team, planners and surveyors to capture complex data onsite, with the survey team able to extract all the data required when they return to the office.

We’re excited to see our customers making the most of the latest Leica technology.

The new Leica BLK360 captures the world around you with full colour panoramic images overlaid on a high accuracy point cloud. Simple to use with just a single push of a button, the BLK360 enables AEC professionals to capture the world around them quicker and easier than ever before.
